Academic Courses

Academic Courses are designed for those students who wish to study various academic subjects with the eventual aim of attaining a place at a University, in the UK or overseas.

GCSE & IGCSE Level Courses

The GCSE, or General Certificate of Secondary Education (formerly O' Level) is the standard qualification marking the end of the first stage of high school. GCSE examinations are taken by all students, normally at the age of 16, and are usually required in order to progress onto AS/A Level and University Foundation programmes. They are therefore the natural choice for overseas students who wish to come to the UK at an earlier stage in order to get a grounding in British education before moving on to those courses.

AS & A Level Courses

Traditional qualifications for the best universities.

A-Levels are traditionally the standard qualification required to obtain a place at a UK university. These days, international students also have the option of University Foundation courses, which we also offer. A Levels tend to be longer courses and, as well as being an independent qualification, they provide a more in-depth preparation for university study.

English Courses & Academic Courses, The Abbey College, Malvern

Since being established in 1874, The Abbey College has provided Academic Courses and English courses for many students from different countries. The Abbey College campus spans some 70 acres and provides the perfect setting for us to offer a large range of sporting and social activities as well as a high level of residential care.

The site of The Abbey College was established as a seat of learning in 1874, lying on the lower slopes of the famous Malvern Hills in central England. Foundation / Access Level Courses

One-year fast track to Universities.

University Foundation courses, also known as Access or Bridging courses, offer students a fast track, one-year route to a wide range of British and other University degree courses as an alternative to A Levels. They are of a similar standard to A Levels and are best considered as the first year of a four-year undergraduate degree course.

Medical Foundation Courses

The Abbey College offers an exclusive and unique Foundation Programme for Medicine and Dentistry courses at renowned Universities in the Czech Republic, at the heart of the European Union. These courses are taught entirely in English and are recognised for Full Registration in countries worldwide, including by the General Medical Council of London.

This, combined with the lower cost of the courses and cost of living, makes them a serious alternative to courses at British Universities. Entry is guaranteed following successful completion of the course at The Abbey. For full details, please visit our sister website www.cmucas.com

Facilities

One of the great advantages of The Abbey College is our magnificent campus. We aim to provide all the necessary facilities needed for students on one site. 70 acres (28 hectares) of private grounds include a well-stocked library, self-access centre, up-to-date computer rooms (for academic and personal use), three science laboratories, 15 classrooms, common room areas, a multi-gym, a licensed private bar for over 18's, and various other specialist rooms.

Accommodation Welfare

As hosts to a fully residential international community the issue of welfare is extremely important to us. Our specialist Student Services department is run by full-time experienced staff who are responsible for every aspect of student health, well-being and accommodation.

Various types of accommodation are available, to suit different requirements. The majority of students choose to stay on-campus in one of our residential houses, divided by age and sex, although host families and selfcontained rooms are also available.

Three meals per day are provided daily on-campus, seven days per week, for all students, and are included in the fees. Brunch may be offered as an alternative to breakfast and lunch at weekends. The college operates a smartcard system, allowing students to purchase extra items if required.

Holiday Courses

Since 1969, The Abbey College has been running high-quality, all inclusive Easter and Summer English Language courses. These programmes provide an excellent opportunity to combine learning English with the benefit of activities, cultural excursions and sports tuition in a fun, residential environment. Our outstanding fully residential 70 acre (28 hectare) campus in central England has everything the student needs in one of the safest locations in the country.

Lessons

The day after arrival at The Abbey College, students take a written test and are placed in classes according to age and English language ability.

EFL teachers teach general English, involving the key skills of:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking

A new topic and grammar point are introduced every week, allowing new students to start afresh from the week they arrive.

Tailor Made Courses

The Abbey College offers optional private one-to-one tuition at an hourly rate for students who wish to spend more time with teachers. Students can cover work they do not fully understood, or go through entirely new topics. These can be built into the student schedule to suit.

Courses For Families

The English courses and facilities available at The Abbey College offer an opportunity for whole families to enjoy a holiday in England, while at the same time participating in a well-organised programme of events which includes the following:

  • English lessons
  • Social activities
  • Cultural excursions

Courses For Groups

An increasingly popular way of studying languages abroad is for groups of students of any age, from the same country, to travel and stay together as a group.

In this way they gain all the benefits of being with friends and a group leader whilst at the same time mixing with our many nationalities on-campus.

The college runs seperate programmes for three seperate age groups, as follows. Please note there may be some cross-over at times.

A member of staff is assigned to meet students as they enter the public area, between these times.

English Language Courses

For over 35 years, The Abbey College has developed English language courses to meet every requirement, alongside the main academic school. Our language courses are available to all age groups and abilities and run throughout the year for short or long term courses.

Courses - English

There are two main types of course available. English All Year courses are available outside the summer season to Adults (18+), Teens (12+) and Groups, with course content adaptable according to the individuals involved.

Vacation Courses are available during the summer and Easter seasons to individuals and groups, and have a stronger focus on activities and excursions.

English All Year

English All Year Courses are available to Teens (12-17) and Adults (18+), and from Beginner to Advanced level. Courses run from September to June, excluding four weeks at Christmas and two at Easter, and course start/finish dates are flexible.

ESP, 1:1, Executive & Pre-boarding

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Course
These courses are for students (mostly on Adult courses) who wish to improve their English ability within their area of work. For example, a student taking the Business ESP option will learn about the language, vocabulary and expressions that are used by business people.

Group Programmes

An increasingly popular way of choosing to study with us is for groups of students, either from the same school or just from the same country, to travel and stay together as a group. In this way they gain all the benefits of being with friends and a group leader whilst mixing with our many different nationalities on campus.

Examinations

The College offers a number of English language examination courses for students wanting to gain an internationally-recognised independent qualification. Some of these may also be necessary for Academic Course students. Our course details provide a detailed description of the Examination Courses we provide.
